1) Chronological vs. Functional Resumes.
Understand the pros and cons of each and decide how many of each you will need.
2) A Million Dollar Resume is a Cheap Resume.
Consider that each word costs One Million Dollars….Now decide which words you can afford to include on your resume and which ones you can do without.
3) Object to the Objective - it is optional only!
Prime Resume Real Estate-Replace with Summary or Achievements
4) Achievements are more important than you think.
So Think of some Achievements.
5) Get Rid of “Job Description” Language.
You did more than “just enough”. Think of the “Other Duties as Described” part of your jobs. What made you DIFFERENT from every other person who did that job or does that job today.
6) Make “Cyber-Safe” Resumes.
Consider how you will deliver your resume. Most of the time we Email or Upload. This is Cyberspace – full of hackers and spammers and folks with the intent to cause harm and havoc.
7) Consider “Botoxing” your resume!
Make sure you don’t age-out of opportunities.
8) Text-Speak and other No-No’s.
Get a proof-reader. Never let your own judgment be the final say. Proof readers can catch many things beyond just spell checking.
9) ALWAYS have a companion to your resume.
A resume without a COVER LETTER is like going stag to the dance. Your resume needs to be escorted to it’s destination by a well-tailored and very handsome Cover Letter.
6) Make "Cyber-Safe" Resumes.
ReplyDeleteI have been concerned about putting my address, phone number, etc. on a resume that I would post on the internet.
I would like more information about this very topic.
Thank you! :)
Addresses that are "Street" Addresses are the most dangerous. You could use a P.O. Box # and create a lot more security for yourself. The ultimate address for any cyber resume is just the EMAIL address. Not much need for anything more.
ReplyDeleteLand-Line Phone numbers are much more dangerous than Cell Phone numbers. Land-lines show up in "Reverse Directories" where your address will likely show up. If not your physical address, your city and that's just a minor delay for the thief.
For some women, putting thier first name on the resume is a give-away as to their gender and some feel very insecure about that. We suggest using your Initial instead of your name. Either gender can take advantage of this technique if it provides a better sense of security.
